Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can follow lists of authors instead of following individual authors. All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, external applications, Short Message Service (SMS) .
Technology author Steven Johnson describes the basic mechanics of Twitter as "remarkably simple:"
As a social network, Twitter revolves around the principle of followers. When you choose to follow another Twitter user, that user's tweets appear in reverse chronological order on your main Twitter page. If you follow 20 people, you'll see a mix of tweets scrolling down the page
Importance Of Twitter:
Twitter has its web interface, with a search bar and a sidebar of "trending topics"—the most common phrases currently appearing in messages. Every public update sent to Twitter from anywhere in the world 24/7 can be instantly indexed and made discoverable via real-time search, With this feature Twitter has become something unexpectedly important—a discovery engine for finding out what is happening right now.
Conventions Should Know While Tweeting:
Once you Logged in started tweeting(Sending tweets) the users who follow you will get the tweet displayed on their twitter’s main page.And while tweeting there are some rules ,i think we can’t call them rules its better to call them as conventions..There are some thing called Replies,Mentions,Direct message,Favorites and Retweet which every tweep(twitter user) should know.
1) Replies & Mentions:
1. If the first character of your tweet is a @, then it can only be seen by (a) the recipient and (b) any of your followers who are also following the recipient.
2.You can mention a person in your tweet by preceding @ before his name in the middle of the tweet
3. If the @ or @'s are preceded by any other character, even a space, then the tweet can be seen by all your followers.
2) ReTweets:
If you like a tweet by the person whom you are following and also want your followers know about it .You can Retweet it. Retweet is a mechanism which gives the importance to the person who originally owns the tweet and also help others to make that tweet available to their followers .
3) Direct Messages :
If you want send a message only to one of your follower then this direct message helps you.If you start your tweet with “D <your follower name> <message> “ then this tweet will be visible only to the person whom you mentioned in the beginning of the message.
4) Favorites:
Twitter follows its dictionary meaning.You can add you favorite tweets as your favorite by clicking on the start mark beside each tweet.
5) Lists:
List a group of tweeps of particular category.Twitter has given option to their users to make the lists and you can create your own category and make lists. Here is an example
If you are a blogger and want to get connected with all other bloggers of your region or country it will be easy for you if some has already created a list about the bloggers of his region and if you belong to same region you can just follow the list and you will get tweets from all the bloggers in the list.This is far easier than to search whole twitter to find bloggers of your region and add them individually.
I think you don’t know this ,Barack Obama the present US president used twitter to campaign.and many universities use twitter to know feedback from students about their courses.You can get a list fields where twitter is used Wikipedia link .And recently many celebrities have joined twitter to get attached to their fans and here a list of celebrities in twitter.
One thing i should mention here .Many websites use twitter to publicize their articles.They will provide you a retweet button..If you like that article you can retweet it so that the article will be known to your followers so that site gets more visitors and good article really need publicity and also a Retweet.A retweet button will look like this [tweetmeme source=HtNaMuS only_single=false] .Why cant you test this one and feel the real Retweet.While retweeting it will ask you your twitter account details and feel free to give it your username and password because it use a secured connection in which your details are never revealed to others.So happy retweeting .
